A practice in Utrecht that emphasises prevention and long-term patient relationships is looking for a dentist for three to four days a week. You take over an existing patient base from a colleague who is retiring.
What you’ll be doing
You take over an existing patient base and build your own relationship with it. That is the work of the first few months: getting to know people, going through treatment plans and deciding what really needs doing and what can wait.
The practice schedules generous appointment times — better than faster. You do general dentistry and work closely with the dental hygienists, who run their own clinics. Prevention is not a side issue here but the starting point, and that sometimes means explaining to a patient why you are not going to start drilling yet.
Who this suits
This suits you if you want patients who will still be in your chair in five years’ time, and if you find it interesting to make a population healthier step by step. You have time to explain and you are not judged on hourly revenue. If you are after variety, complex cases or fast throughput, you will get bored here quickly.

Education and experience
BIG registration as a dentist. Experience in general practice is welcome, but a newly qualified dentist with an affinity for preventive work fits here too: there are enough colleagues to consult.
What you bring
Patience for the groundwork and a taste for patients you will keep seeing for years. You can explain why you are or are not doing something, even when the patient expected otherwise. Honestly: the records are partly out of date — for the first few months you will be tidying and updating alongside treating.
